TED – Noreena Hertz: How to use experts — and when not to

Noreena discusses expertise, and the need to genuinely democratize it, as opposed to pretenses of its democratization by antiscience-proponents, so that we can give experts their due without being uncritical about it, and engaging in needless, and possibly dangerous unconscious and unjustified hero-worship.

She puts forth an argument I found compelling of what she calls ‘managed dissent’ and allowing ourselves to think in new ways when the authority of experts and especially those highly placed may prove inadequate.

As Carl Sagan once said:

“If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we’re up for grabs.”
